Leave No Trace and Visit Boulder Introduce Boulder-Focused Stewardship Initiative

Boulder, Colorado, is a world-renowned destination for outdoor adventure and community culture, with miles of scenic trails, iconic peaks, and vibrant open spaces. The national Leave No Trace organization and Visit Boulder have joined forces to launch a new responsible recreation and sustainability initiative tailored to this unique city. This collaboration empowers visitors and locals to make sustainable choices, whether on the trail, in town, or at home.

The BoulderWise campaign brings together guidance for recreating in Boulder’s open spaces and tips for everyday scenarios that build on the city’s strong conservation ethic and expand everyday stewardship messages. These educational pillars provide clear, actionable guidance that is aligned with Boulder’s deep connections to nature and outdoor recreation. From preparing for outdoor excursions and protecting trails to choosing greener transportation options and reducing waste, the campaign helps individuals take steps to care for the places they love.

“We are reminded every day that our city’s breathtaking open spaces and vibrant spirit don’t just inspire travelers, they connect people to something bigger than themselves,” said Charlene Hoffman, CEO of Visit Boulder. “We believe that experiencing Boulder comes with a responsibility to care for it, and our partnership with Boulder-based Leave No Trace reflects the heart of this community: coming together to protect and preserve the places we cherish for generations to come.”

To ensure the messages truly reflect community values, Visit Boulder convened a series of focus groups with local stakeholders. This collaborative process identified the most important responsible recreation and sustainability practices to highlight, ensuring that the final recommendations are both practical and easy to implement. Additional resources are also being developed for the local hospitality industry and for groups hosting meetings, conferences, or gatherings in Boulder.

“With the Leave No Trace organization headquartered in Boulder, we’re especially proud to work with Visit Boulder to promote targeted and sustainable actions anyone can apply to protect the region’s natural beauty,” said Brice Esplin, Leave No Trace’s Director of Sustainable Tourism and Partnerships.
